Air Quality sensor instructions

Tue Aug 18, 2015 2:36 am

I'm looking for more info on hooking up air quality sensors to the raspberry pi besides the fart detector.
Anyone know of any videos or tutorials around? I didn't find anything substantial through google.

What aspect of air quality are you sensing?

Have you identified any suitable sensors? If you have, someone could suggest how to hook one up to the Pi.

I'd like to use a sensor that detects methane.
I'm not very advanced at wiring things up but have done some LEDs, camera, and NFC module work already.

Have you identified a methane sensor that you think would be suitable?

The fart detector links to a carbon monoxide sensor at RS. Here is a methane sensor from RS:

Here is the sensor on a PCB:

What you have to do is identify a sensor, read the datasheet about that sensor, determine if the sensor works for what you have in mind, then figure out how to hook it up. Some sensors need calibration, so you'll have to bear that in mind when you design the whole system.

These days, some things really are just plug and play, but not everything.

Actually, here are some cheap ones from China:

But... you still have to read up on how to use them properly.
