USB trouble for picture taking automation

Sat Jul 04, 2015 1:24 am

Hi all,

I am using USB 2.0 cables to power 10 cameras automatically. The issue I am facing is that I am using 60 feet of USB cables for each USB port on the Pi 2.0 and I am not consistently getting all cameras to fire (take pictures). I am using 2 30ft USB hubs to connect these cameras. I have already written the code in gphoto2 to take pictures using 48 iterations every 10 minutes. I really don't think the source of my problem is the programming, but the actual cables. Sometimes it works with 60ft cables and sometimes it doesn't. I was wondering if I could use some other type of cable converter like cat5/6 that would plug into usb. I pretty much powering these cameras to, not only sending signals.

If you could throw some feedback my way on how I might troubleshoot this or any suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Also, I am not sure the integrity of the R. Pi 2 such that it can handle 4 cameras on 1 Pi.

What about using those Cat5 extenders with active USB hubs at their ends and connecting the cameras to the hubs.
