Cat spa tub weekend plumbing work - Part 3
Now I am order a digital float ball switch from TaoBao, for 14 yuan. I could not figure out how the things works, just by looking at the illustrations. So I need to wait for its arrival, hopefully in 2 days. I think I can use it for the cat spa tub.

Float balll switch and Float ring switch

Earlier I made a laughable mistake of thinking that a float ball switch must have a floating object with the shape of a ball or sphere or at least an oblong ball like thing. So I ordered two things, one with a ball, another with a tube, with reed switch sensor inside the tube, thinking that they should work together.

But after seeing the objects, I know that they are two different things, each of which works alone, and not at all supposed to work together.

The float ball switch is sort of a all mechanical water tap, controlling the water flow, much like the float ball thing in home's traditional toilet flush tank.

The other is a floating magnetic core, used to sense the water position by switching on or off of a reed switch, to work like a push button, to be detected by say, a Rpi GPIO pin, ...

I often mixed up Reed Switch with Hall effect sensor. I once thought that Reed Switch was invented by a guy named Reed (I did not know the meaning of 'reed' then), and Hall effect sensor by another guy called Hall. I read that Hall was from Cambridge, and always thought that he was just another very smart guy from Cambridge, UK (I did not know then there is another Cambridge in US).

Just now Google told me that Reed switch was invented by Ellwood in 1936 at Bell Lab, US, and Hall effect discovered by 1879 by Edwin Hall while he was working on his doctoral degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, US, ...

Weekend Plumbing Work Plan

The Humble Plumber

So this morning I had all my plumber tools, and accessories ready, and started to according to my plan, insert two 1/2" pipes with screws before the hot and cold water batch taps.

I thought I could proudly complete the easy job within 20 minutes.

1. I first tried to remove the two 1/2 inch nuts from the far end of the pipe connecting the taps, but I found the screws got very rusty and stuck and impossible to turn. I gave up after 5 minutes of hard labour.

2. Then I tried to remove the two 3/4 screws nearest the taps instead. The 3/4 screws also refused to move, and I had to use WD40 to lubricate the threads. Finally, after more hard work, I could finally remove the taps.

2. I then tried to complete the job with all the accessories I just bought, including 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch adapters, with different combinations of external and internal threads, and 1/2 inch taps. But I found that I forgot to buy the most important adapter with the unique external/internal combination of threads. I tried all alternatives, but all with no luck.

3. The cheap 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch spanner I just bought also disappointed me. It is not doing its job properly, and my old adjustable spanners are awkward to use for big the 3/4 size screws. I also forgot to buy the 3/4 inch nylon washers, and had to use the old worn out ones

4. After two hours, I found it impossible to complete the job and so I fell back to the original arrangement.

In other words, I was going back to square one! But it is not exactly back square one, because the worn out washers were not fitting well, and one of the taps is leaking, so it is worst than square one.

5. My lesson learnt is not to look down other people's trade. Plumber's work looks simple and easy, comparing to the seemingly more complicated electronics, but, well, I now appreciate more why many plumbers make more money than electronics technicians (yes, I was once upon a time an electronics technician, doing maintenance work of semiconductor testing equipment in local factories;my tool of trade then was a screwdriver, not a spanner. :) , ...

So the humble plumber called it a day.

Hot water Cold water 3/4 inch / 1/2 inch piping Saturday morning exercise

Last Saturday morning my plumbing work ended up in a big mess. This Saturday morning I was more prepared and planned, and completed the job in less than one hour. However the pipe joints are slightly leaking. I guess I did not know some of the tricks. I only observed the plumber when he comes to work and thought I know all the tricks. Well, all jobs, including computer programming, are easier seeing than doing.

Float switch calibration

I found the float ball has a hysteresis of about 90 degrees. The ball flips about about +45 degrees and flops about -45 degrees.

Update 2018nov06hkt1125

The big plastic float ball switch has inside a small but heavy stainless steel ball which rolls along a grove. When the big plastic ball tilts upwards, the small steel ball rolls down towards a micro switch and activates it. When the big ball tilts downwards, the small steel ball rolls away from the micro switch and deactivates it.
