Increase Pi USB Bluetooth RX power.

Mon Oct 08, 2018 10:47 pm

I am working on a robot project. I disabled the Pi3b+ onboard bluetooth in favor of a Trendnet TBW-106UB , class 1 USB dongle. It works great and connected to the PS3 controller to control the robot with no issues.

I am curious, is there is a way to increase the RX, receive, power to add additional range?

Currently, this is what I see.

hci0: Type: Primary Bus: USB
BD Address: 00:15:83:F3:61:C8 ACL MTU: 310:10 SCO MTU: 64:8
Inquiry transmit power level: 4

Thanks in advance,
D.

My gut feeling is to say no. I know that's not helpful with no backup documentation. I just think that, if there were a simple software tweak to increase range, the manufacturer would have already tweaked it.

I was hoping. I saw there were commands to adjust TX power:
To set Max tx power:
sudo bccmd psset -s 0x0000 0x0017 -16
To set default tx power:
sudo bccmd psset -s 0x0000 0x002d -16

USB specs:
https://www.trendnet.com/products/prodd ... solution02

So I thought I'd ask.

Bccmd seems to be specific to CSR chipsets, and I am far from proficient with the command sets of particular manufacturers. So, again, I don't know.

This might be an overly simple understanding but wouldn't recieve range be limited by the antenna design and the power of the remote transmitting device?

I guess you might need to boost local tx power to mkae sure the remote device can see your outgoing transmissions.

I increased the TX power. It seemed to help. I have connectivity at about 60 feet now. Thank you for the suggestion.
The USB dongle also seems very 'directional' in it's signal strength.
