My Raspberry Pi project is called RaspRack. It is a 1U serverunit containing five Raspberry Pi, a networkswitch, an USB-hub and six fans. To power it it need one 12V and one 5V input. It also need a networkcable lto work properly.

On the front there are 5 rectangular holes for SD-cards to be put in, and above each hole there are a green LED. The LED will glow if the raspberry behind it is powered. On each side there are three holes for the fans. The fans on one side sucks in air into the box, and the fans on the other side pushes the air out which create a good airflow trough the RaspRack. The backside of the rack is where power and network come in. There are also five flipswitches for turning on and off the power to each Raspberry Pi. The whole box is painted matte black and on the lid the Raspberry Pi logo is painted in silver.

Like the front-accessed SD slots, that's a good idea.

I also like the paint job on the top! :D

The case a standard unit for a 19"" rack and should be widely available. I think the OP modified a 1U server unit (holes for the SD cards, etc)

I think 6 fans will be gross overkill.

That really depends on where it's installed if you stuck it in a rack of just these then most likely but if you stuck this in a rack with proper rack servers while the pi's don't kick out alot of heat they do so by having the six fans it helps deal with the excess heat radiating from the surrounding systems

nope, 144 fans is Gross overkill.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

If you added a 12v to 5v DC to DC converter you could reduce the connections to just the 12v input.

The OP hasn't come back for a long time folks; just saying, these helpful design hints are probably being ignored ;)

Maybe not for the OP, but maybe useful for the 'resurrector' of this topic. See http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 58#p643029?
