Manage servers with RPi

Hello,

We are an association that specializes in hosting servers.
We are putting in place a dedicated infrastructure on our own machines and are therefore looking for a hardware solution to manage the reboot our servers ..

We thought to connect son on restart buttons servers and GPIO ports RPi card, it seems there a good idea? Would you have another idea to offer with RPi?

Knowing roughly the mass of servers to manage for a bay is 28 machines is it feasible with a card or does it need more?

Thank you in advance

Hi,

Take care that you isolate RasPi and servers' reset button.

Otherwise, this seems to me very straight forward challenge... which watchdog utility are you going to use on servers ?

Best wishes, Ivan Zilic.

Do you really need a separate machine to reboot them? Most server hardware has similar features available over LAN for example, and it would be quite odd that a server would need "physical" reset. And there are puppet and other system scripting services that can help manage them over network.

Watchdog softs will be iLO/IDRAC

But if the server's hardware is off, how can we make a hard reboot so ?..

If I remember rightly you can do a power on with iLO on dell and hp servers or you can buy power strips with network interface. That's how we planned to manage our Ireland office, otherwise you need a local button monkey with access to server room.

You can use NPN transistors like this for each server:
