Portable travel router

Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:06 pm

for my job i travel alot, recently i got fed up on paid internet on airports

- overpriced
- sometimes my credit card gets billed but internet refuses to work (hello Paris)
- really bad/slow internet to pay for

here is may way to deal with it,

so i made rasperry pi into a wireless router/repeater
with the function of spoofing mac address to a random one or to one that is already associated

basicly most wifi hotspots give you some minutes free internet, then promt you after to pull your credit card and pay big bucks for little internet

so to prevent me hacking my tablet/rooting/jailbraking and preventing future upgrades of my portable devices
i made a repeater that allows me to do the spoofing for me

and with extra benefits:
- has a caching squid proxy with spam filter (squidguard)
- the usb wifi adapter has a better range then the build in antennas of my ipad/galaxy tab
- automaticly does the spoofing with intervals

the squid cache and squidguard speed up my internet alot,
and saves me alot of megabytes on traffic if i use this in combination with 3G or 4G mobile internet

wlan0 is working as hotspot
wlan1 is the one making wireless connections

i can scan for wifi networks on both interfaces, just wlan0 gives me more data like signal quality
where wlan1 driver doesnt give this information

but on wlan0 i get less results since this dongle has no antenna, its only supposed to work as access point
and eth0 can also be bridged for in hotels if needed or at home

Any plans to release the script or create a distro? Would love one of these!

Me tooo please!! It looks like very strong solution. I travel almost every week so I would exactly need this. Any chance you coming back with some plug and play solution for us? Thanks.

What make of wifi adapters do you use?

Also, the config/scripts would be nice... :)

This is interesting, but the screen shots are completely unreadable on my computer due to the tiny size and it would be kind of nice to have some details about how you set up the router.

I've been looking for away of tunneling the Google play store for a while that doesn't require rooting because Samsung seems to not understand the concept of ownership. Frustrating to say the least that when I buy something, I don't just automatically get all the rights to do what I want with it.
