Tutorial on Using the Pi as a Web Server

Thu Mar 13, 2014 2:01 am

I will be starting a series of posts on my blog that are designed to provide a simplified guide to installing a basic LAMP stack on the Pi and using it as a web server. The tutorial can be found at my Wordpress site http://raspberrypiandr.net/wordpress. I am, of course hosting the Wordpress app on my RPi and it works great!

I'll be interested to see how your Pi does as you accumulate posts and traffic. One of the downsides of WP is the dynamic loading of content and the slower speeds that result.

My RasPi has been running for well over a year with WordPress. It runs just as well now as it did when installed. In fact it runs better as I have learned what to install with it to give it good performance. There is a decent amount of content on my site.

Caching helps as it reduces the dynamic content. The biggest performance boost is installing php-apc.

It has been very stable. The only problems I seem to have is with brownouts and the occasional bad update. Backing up before changes is very important!

Good performance is debatable. The loading is fairly slower then most sites. I am getting about 6 second load times per page.

The Pi really isn't very good for sites with much traffic in mind. Pis are great and all, but people seem to overestimate their power in situations like these. Just because it can, doesn't mean it should.
