frustration installing owncloud

Mon Feb 03, 2014 8:47 am

I'm rather upset and frutstrated because of the number of times I've tried installing owncloud and the number of times I've failed.
These are a handful of the resources I've read but I still have no idea how to get owncloud working and syncing with my mobile phone. :

and there are at least 50 other pages I've read and always, always failed to get it working. Even downloading images made by others did not work. Alot of tutorials are just a little outdated and it simply failed. It often ends in a permissions issue to my drive and no amount of chmod or chown or whatever works. I have no idea why!

I also got to know that if i need to access the pi as an owncloud server, I need a dynamic ip service. I signed up to no-ip and opened up port forwarding, but I have no idea what i am supposed to see when the port fowarding works. I've searched online for websites that check for port forwarding but the no-ip address given to me only points to my router configuration page. Pages like http://www.canyouseeme.org always give me a connection timed out answer. Like what can I do ? do i type " xxx.no-ip.biz:8080 " on my browser or what is it that I can do to know that portfowarding worked.

Basically none of them is made for a new person with a new raspberry pi , an existing ntfs hdd and a new sd card. Can somebody please... please point me to how I can know how to implement my owncloud server on my raspberry pi with a good explanation of what is going on and why we do it that way. Thank you so so much

As a sidenote, my pi is successfully used now as a samba server to serve files from my existing ntfs hdd. I just wanted to add on new functionality as a owncloud server. I just want to upload or download files remotely with the owncloud app.

did you try this one?

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=52999

seems pretty straight forward, works for me

If you use SSL, you also have to forward port 443. I ended up not using SSL since unless you pay for a certificate, most web browsers will complain, and the desktop client seems to not work as well.

This page explains how to not use SSL (scroll to you see NGINX)
