Internet Connection Blues

After reviewing every topic thread on forums I could find on the subject over the past few weeks, I can safely admit that I am the least technical person to have ever tried to install a Rasberry Pi. I am not a programmer but can follow instructions and get my new Rpi hooked up. I have tried XBMC Raspbmc pre-loaded and XBMC loads fine but despite every conceivable network connection available in the XBMC/ Programs/ Raspbmc, I could not connect to the internet via Ethernet Cable or WiFi. Thinking it might have been an OS problem, I then erased, reformatted the SD Card and copied the NOOBS files and tried to boot. However, after resizing FAT Partitions, the screen doesn't change. It appears to be searching for what I would assume to be an internet connection so it can bring up the screen for OS options. This never happens.
I have checked all the usual suspects and all the power supplies are functioning, all cables are functioning and connected to the correct ports, I have powered down & reset modem, I have powered down & reset router, I have powered down & reset Rpi. I do not believe that I have a malfunctioning Rpi or bad OS software problem. I believe that I have an internet access problem between the Rpi and my router and/ or modem. Before throwing in the towel, I thought i would share my setup and see if anyone can help me.
Here is my setup:
* Raspberry Pi Model B 512MB
* High Quality 1A 5V Switching Power Supply
* 16GB Transcend Class 10 SD Card
* Ethernet cable (known to work on Apple TV)
* HDMI cable (known to work on Apple TV)
* HDTV (known to work with Comcast cable & Apple TV)
* (2013) Netgear R6200v2 802.11ac Duel Band Gigabit Router
* (2004) Scientific Atlanta DCP 2100 Cable Modem
* Coax Cable to Comcast Triple Play (phone, cable & internet)
Please keep in mind that I am a layman and advice should be dumbed-down to a user level as opposed to a programmer's level.
I thank you for any assistance you can provide in advance.
