VPN advise

Sat Oct 05, 2013 4:07 pm

Hi, I currently have my pi set up as a web server running a personal website. I would also like to encrypt my online activity when connecting to the web from public access points. I don't need to spoof who I am, but would like to encrypt my connection in case I'm not using https on a particular site.
I managed to find the following: http://raspberrypi-hacks.com/29/turn-yo ... pn-server/
...but would like to know what other people recommend (if different) and why.

I use this as a VPN for when I work away and use hotel wifi. I've also used it in the Middle East to circumvent their firewall with no issues at all.

Thanks for the reply. It was an interesting read, but when I looked into PPTP more, the article stated...
PPTP is too insecure (even its creator Microsoft has abandoned it) and should therefore be avoided.
I did manage to learn about the other options for doing vpn like stuff from that article. So on with the research ;)

I used this: http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... p?p=704519 and set my Pi up for exactly the same as you; encrypted connections while using public hotspots.

There have more than many VPN providers in the Industry but few of them are providing excellent vpn service and features.
I have used PrivateInternetAccess VPN and i believe it is worthy. Not only it is cheap but it is fast and provide excellent server performance and connectivity.
It offers 2848+ Servers in 20+ Countries and compatible on android and IOS.
You will get much more about PIA and some exclusive offers in its detailed PrivateInternetAccess Review

Get a VPN that covers as many protocols as possible. You can then balance speed and security/detection levels to your liking. I'd recommend PureVPN (review here: http://www.bestvpnservice.com/purevpn ) or IPVanish. The former supports everything from OpenVPN to IKEv2.

You need a VPN which provides 256 encryption as well some protocols. I read Review of PureVPN which give 256 encryption as well some protocols like (PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, OpenVPN & IKEv2). So i suggest you to at-least read it's review before buying any VPN.

If you care about security and privacy I'd recommend either of these: Express VPN, PIA or IPvanish. Express VPN is a bit pricey but it worth it.

If you are downloading any file using torrent and facing security problems, looking for the best torrent vpn service so my advice is with Ivacy VPN which is the most fastest, secure and reliable service and I have used this VPN software while traveling for different countries and I never face any speed or other problems with it.

That's pretty interesting question, you need most secure VPN service which will never allow any person to watch you data. for that reason you should consider to find out which one is the best support for torrenting search for torrent VPN, because not all VPN service provider will give you such fastest and anonymous connection for torrent.

Looks like you need a VPN for that. I would highly recommend to read honest 3rd party review of a VPN before paying for it. This is the only way to save money. I would suggest to go with pureVPN but you need to read the review first. This is the far-most honest PureVPN review I have found online which shows testing and results on different locations.

I guess want you wanted is using your Pi as both a web server to host your personal site and a VPN server for yourself to use. I think this can be done.

By taking a look at the link you mentioned, I think you are on the right track to install OpenVPN on our Pi.

However, there're one concern though. Many people use a VPN to hide their IP address as well. I guess your Pi might be sitting at your home and thus has your home's IP address. If you use it a s VPN server, your online activity will be associated with your own IP address.

To hide your home IP, you might have to use commercial VPN services as mentioned by other people above. Actually today there're many different VPN providers to choose from, each with different focuses, such as VPN for China, VPN for torrenting, etc, you can choose one based on your need.

Anyway, here're some popular VPN providers (with reviews) that you might consider: ExpressVPN, Total VPN, VyprVPN. etc.

Good Luck!

There are some good suggestions here. But there's one I want to add. NordVPN is also a great and cheap option. It's fast, logless and it has some good security features, like the kill switch.

Every time when I connect raspberry pi with monitor, TV or computer to study something new about scripting. First, I use ExpressVPN for secure online privacy it also works as an anonymous torrent VPN. otherwise, hackers, data trackers and ISP's try to access that information.

Even if you don't need to spoof yourself but when you use an AnonymousVPN service your online identity-IP address is hidden and changed for the security from snoopers and hackers so that you are secure when you browse through an open public Wi-Fi and the internet data you send or receive is also encrypted because VPN creates a separate encrypted tunnel to route your data traffic via this tunnel and keep all the snoopers away from you and kick ISP spying on you and what is the best I love about Torrent VPN is that I can bypass all types of geo-restrictions and can access all blocked streaming or Torrenting websites no matter wherever I go I am able to do it because I travel frequently so this is the best feature for me.

I have a few suggestions because I have used many VPN providers over the years. The reason being is that I am an avid travller and I want complete internet freedom and VPN helps me with that. There are some providers that are good for torrenting and some good for torrenting and others good for countries like China.

I am going to list them here with their pros and cons.
- Works perfectly well in China and has awesome speeds. Always my companion when I am travelling to China.
- Good for split Tunneling, When I don't want all of my applications going through a VPN tunnel.
- The most trustworth VPN provider out there, Its cheap its fast and most of all it doesnt keep any logs.
The only Provider which still supports Netflix.

Well thats all, here are my list of reliable VPN. I hope I have helped :)

If you want encryption only then I suggest you to use PIA which is one of the most popular vpn for torrenting in Germany. There are lots of other VPN providers which claim that they provide 99.99% security and anonymity but when you compare their prices and features than Private Internet Access easily win.

I think in the event that you go with free VPN after few time they will track you and block you once more though there are many free vpns you may possibly decide to try such as Tunnelbear, Spotflux, TOR or Zenmate also good option but if you usually access MLB.tv then buy a vpn at cheap cost if you are able few VPNs i would suggest to read https://www.thevpnlab.com/reviews/purevpn-review/ .
