Web server and Mail Server (plus possible torrent box too)

Thu Sep 12, 2013 12:41 pm

Hi peeps,

Seen a couple of tuts about creating a webserver and a couple setting up a mail server... I'm new to all this but was wondering if there's a specific way to do both or would it just be a case of following each tutorial? like do I have to integrate them some way?

Also if I wanted to use it as a torrent box with an external hdd would it just be a case of installing the relavant software or would it affect servery type things due to bandwidth usage?

hmmm.... just ran

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and got

Code: Select all

E: unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/mirrordirector.raspbian.org_raspbian_dists_wheezy_non-free_binary-armhf_Packages (1)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened
any idea's what I've done wrong? it also won't let me install apache2

I'm used to fedora for linux so not used to using apt-get etc... any help would be awesome

all working now... using apache2...

I used this tut for the web server

http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspber ... eb-Server/

seemed pretty straight forward but have a couple of q's as i'm new to the hosting side of things...

Firstly I want to use wordpress... I'll check on their site for using that shortly... not a massive issue but hey... :D
Secondly... how do I use my own domain name? I currently have a wp site under hugill.me.uk and I want to use that from the pi...
Thirdly... is this secure? or will i need to add something else to it to help keep it secure? ( not that I expect a portfolio site will get hacked...)

as an aside... i'm supposed to be able to log in using the name of the box... but I have to use the ip address (local ip) to access it... I assume that means that it's not fully "live" yet... how would I sort this out?

Ta!
