RPi vs. DNS-323

Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:45 am

I was bored so I decided to see how my RPi configured as a NAS compared to my Dlink DNS-323 I have on my home network.

I used a freeware utility called Lan Speed Test (Lite) v1.3.0 to do the benchmarks and ran the tests from the same PC with under the same conditions.

My DNS-323 has a 500mhz ARM processor and 64MB RAM with two 1 TB disks in a RAID 1 configuration.

My Pi Rev B is running the latest version of Raspbian. It is connected to an external USB hard disk (a 500 GB sata drive in a USB enclosure) and I configured it per the instructions found here: http://www.howtogeek.com/139433/how-to- ... ge-device/

Here are my results and as you can see, under my limited test, the Pi performed better than my NAS. Of course I do not have the RAID redundancy of my NAS setup but interesting nonetheless.

RAID1 will make a difference to write speeds as the NAS has to write the same data twice.
You could also setup software RAID on the Pi and see how that goes :D
