NAS performance?

Fri Jun 28, 2013 5:57 pm

Hi all,

I am a tinkering type of guy... So, the RPi seems like a nice project-- even though I am not sure what I really want to do with one. Maybe a MAME emulator, a little XBMC box or a tiny NAS...

It's with the last option that I have some technical questions. Right now, I have an Open Router from Netgear (WNR3500L) http://www.netgear.com/home/products/wi ... 3500l.aspx

It has a USB port (2.0) which I have a 2TB setup as ersatz-NAS that serves media to my streaming boxes through SMB shares... Would a RPi NAS setup outperform this? I am thinking I'd like to take the CPU load off the router and have a better performing system overall...

Here are the specs of the router:
Broadcom 480 MHz MIPS® 74K CPU, 128 MB NAND flash and 128 MB RAM

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

hello,
I connected a Hard Disk (80GB it's a old Hard Disk) to raspberry to make a small NAS and the result was excellent!
For the performance, well I open two files (movies) from 1GB each, on my smart-TV and on my PC without suffering any slowdown.
I also installed "Transmission" to make it a little torrent downloader, but I have not yet had a chance you test this feature.
