Have the Pi phone home when plugged in. And hide it!

Came across this awesome project. He's made it so when the Pi is plugged into a network it will phone home and allow him to access it from anywhere. You know for "tech support" reasons.

No offense to the author, but better options have already been discussed on the forum..

ssh + cronjob is probably the clumsiest way of setting up remote access.
Using autossh would be better already.

A vpn client such as OpenVPN works best; no tunnel needed.

Just search the forums, many hits will pop up.

Never mind the clumsiness of the poll-once-a-minute-cron-job, this guy has exposed mains wiring!

People drop power-bricks and then plug them in again without a second thought. That's because a properly designed unit will withstand such abuse.

If I drop this thing there doesn't seem to be anything preventing the PSU PCB from sliding up and shorting mains across the GPIO pins. Dead Pi, dead Noob.

Think of it as evolution in action.
