RTL2832u in Raspberry

Fri Mar 22, 2013 4:09 am

Hi I am trying to receive FM using RTL2832u SDR in my Raspberry Pi,
The OS in my raspberry is RASPBIAN WHEEZY and I have used the following commands to install the necessary drivers to the system
sudo apt-get install git
sudo apt-get install cmake
sudo apt-get install libusb-1.0-0.dev
sudo apt-get install build-essential

after which I downloaded and installed rtl-sdr using the following commands

git clone git://git.osmocom.org/rtl-sdr.git
cd rtl-sdr/
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ../
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig

then I copied the rtl-sdr.rules to the directory /etc/udev/rules.d
when i tried to copy using cp command its not copying, hence i used sudo cp to copy the corresponding file

after this i tested using rtl_test -t
the device is not getting detected

but when i use the command lsusb
it is showing that a device of Realtek Semiconductor Corp. is connected

Can anyone help me to solve this problem???

Which dongle are you using, RTL2832U plus Elonics E4000 tuner works fine for me, I am using the Pi as a wireless AP streaming the data to SDRSharp on a tablet.

The output of rtl_test -t should find a device then check the tuning range like this:-

Found Elonics E4000 tuner
Supported gain values (14): -1.0 1.5 4.0 6.5 9.0 11.5 14.0 16.5 19.0 21.5 24.0 29.0 34.0 42.0
Benchmarking E4000 PLL...
[E4K] PLL not locked for 52000000 Hz!
[E4K] PLL not locked for 2209000000 Hz!
[E4K] PLL not locked for 1105000000 Hz!
[E4K] PLL not locked for 1251000000 Hz!
E4K range: 53 to 2208 MHz
E4K L-band gap: 1105 to 1251 MHz

Thanks for your reply, I am using DVB-T-DAB-FM stick, yesterday i found that there is no sound card driver in my pi so i installed it using

sudo apt-get install alsa-utils

Can you just mail me all the steps/commands which you followed so that I can try them and check whether its working on my pi

My raspberry is MODEL B and I am using is DVB-T-DAB-FM dongle

This might be a little late but I've just had the same experience, I started with the commands you followed and my device wasn't being detected by the rtl_test command.

Code: Select all

# Install dependencies
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y install git cmake build-essential libusb-1.0 qt4-qmake libpulse-dev libx11-dev

# Fetch and compile rtl-sdr source
mkdir -p ~/src/
cd ~/src/
git clone git://git.osmocom.org/rtl-sdr.git
cd rtl-sdr
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ../ -DINSTALL_UDEV_RULES=ON
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig
I started again and followed the above instructions for the build stage, then moved the rules file. I rebooted my pi and it worked.

Hopefully this helps?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but this is kind of where I'm at.
I went through the process detailed by the OP, but when I run rtl_test, I get:
"Found 1 device(s):
0: Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR, SN: 00000001

Using device 0: Generic RTL2832U OEM

Kernel driver is active, or device is claimed by second instance of librtlsdr.
In the first case, please either detach or blacklist the kernel module
(dvb_usb_rtl28xxu), or enable automatic detaching at compile time."
Can anyone tell me what this is trying to tell me and what I need to do to fix it please.

Thanks

Paul

I got mine running Breeze FM (107.6FM) and as an ADS-B flight tracker this afternoon.

The ADS-B stuff is at https://github.com/MalcolmRobb/dump1090 the hard part was getting the ../public_html folder from that git clone into the right place (/usr/local/bin/public_html/*) after I built & moved the dump1090 program to /usr/local/bin/dump1090.

Gaghh I'm stuck again...
rtl_test finds the device and gives some useful information about it.
rtl_tcp -a gives:
"Found 1 device(s):
0: Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR, SN: 00000001

Using device 0: Generic RTL2832U OEM
Found Rafael Micro R820T tuner
[R82XX] PLL not locked!
Tuned to 100000000 Hz.
listening...
Use the device argument 'rtl_tcp=192.168.1.114:1234' in OsmoSDR (gr-osmosdr) source
to receive samples in GRC and control rtl_tcp parameters (frequency, gain, ...)

So far, I haven't been able to connect sdr software on my mac to it (cutesdr or sdrdx) - they both refuse to find the sdr in the network settings.

So, either
a) I've totally mis-understood and this was never going to work
b) I've got some basic setup wrong
c) There's some network issue stopping the two communicating (the mac can ping the pi)

To help with the faultfinding, an someone recommend a simple sdr client I can run on the pi (its a pi2 if that makes a difference) just to prove the server functionality

Many thanks

Paul

Before I turned my RTL-SDR into a Piaware ADS-B receiver I was playing with https://airspy.com.

Running SDR# on Windows connecting to the SDR running on my Raspberry.
https://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-tutoria ... n-rtl-sdr/

It's currently feeding ADS-B/S-Mode/MLAT stuff to https://flightaware.com/adsb/piaware/build
