Noob torrent server with VPN help.

Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:15 pm

Hi all,

I'm a complete noob when it comes to the pi and Linux, I currently pay for a VPN and want to use the pi as an always on torrent server. Using the VPN, can I simply attach the pi to my network, install raspian, setup the VPN connection, install a torrent client then using my free logmein account to access it?

Is there an easier way? Would this be secure enough?

Heard of Transmission? ... nt-server/

Basically, it can achieve what you require. Always on Torrent, transmission also uses a web server which you can access from your other PC's. The downloaded files can be shared as well.

Great advice and link by Hexark.

All I want to add is that it's not "simply ...". It will take a lot of time and energy. The result is your a Boss (You + Pi + Linux knowledge = Boss) and you own a great Torrent Box (like what I'm using, and I love it).
Mimi: Where'd you come from?
Doyle: My mom and the authorities are still trying to figure that out.

for the best performance I would suggest to install ArchLinuxARM image on your Pi. Set-up a simple webserver and choose one of the many easy PHP trackers. You don't have to be a Linux guru to get it up and running in just a few hours. Arch is one of the best and most detailed Linux OS there is and it has a wide variety of web-based trackers available from the pacman and yaourt package managers that don't require mad skills to install and configure.

Connecting to a VPN is as simple as downloading your configuration file, install openvpn

Code: Select all

sudo pacman -Sy openvpn
and then connect using

Code: Select all

sudo openvpn /path/to/your/config.ovpn
You can set both to auto start at boot time so you'll never hav to see the console again once installed and you can use any pc to log into your tracker's web interface....

Just give it a try and you can stop calling yourself a n00b by tonight ;)

Don't torrent to your own RPI since you expose your IP.
