File Host with Dynamic IP?

Fri Jan 25, 2013 2:49 pm

I have a Dynamic IP address and I would like to use my Raspberry Pi as a file host? How would I go about doing this?

Dynamic is not big problem. Just ask Google for "dynamic dns" and choose one of many services that give you your own hostname (usually in form anything-you-choose.their-domain.com), which can then be updated by client running on your RasPi to always point to your current address.

Your bigger concern is if the address is public (not 10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x or 192.168.x.x), i.e. reachable from anywhere.

After that , you decide for a Protocol (HTTP/FTP/SFTP)
and perhaps even a application and then open the necessary
ports on you router. I would use SFTP (SSH) on a non-standard
port. Don't forget security. Bots do not target anyone , they
take "innocents" and high-profile victims alike.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org
