i have a brand new rpi 4+ running rasberry pi full os 32 bit. the firmware is up to date as of april 2020. I am new to the linux world but assume i need so sort of driver. Everytime I either hot plug or boot with my lacie big 5 plugged into one of the usb 3 ports my rpi freezes and never mounts the drive. The lacie big 5 is a drive array formatted ntfs and self powered. Any help is much appreciated.

If running Raspberry Pi Operating System you should fully update as there has been constant development:

Is there any way you could reformat that drive as EXT4? Running NTFS on Linux systems is an ugly hack.

Formatting with ext4 didn't help. It appears it is locking up all usb ports.

Maybe this Lacie Big 5 is drawing power from USB ??
Also can you provide a link to the actual product ??

Is the BIG 5's USB3 port an access port or an "expansion" port.

Got it going. Reformatting and Updating the PI resolved the issue. Thanks for the help. I thought it had updated on the initial install but I ran through the update and that cleared it up. Here is a link to the product for those curious. I am running raid 5 with 8TB, 5.5 TB after raid and formatting. Mine is also running on USB 3.
