Looking for how-to network boot with SD card

Sat Feb 22, 2020 10:36 pm

To be clear I want to use an SD card in my pi and give it the ability to bot from the network. Even if the version of pi I have doesn't support network boot natively.

Is it possible to boot from the network with wireless communication only? I have several media players set up that I would like to just boot from the network instead of having to maintain each one?

Thanks

Unfortunately not feasible in the way you imagine:

The other way may be by using External PoE Kit so you can power on the Raspberry Pi SBC ( for models which do not support Netboot or Official PoE Hat )

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-POE ... t-Adapter/

Though you will needs various cables to go with the kit, so at £30 it is more cost effective to buy a RPi.......

Thanks for the reply,

I was really hoping this could work, I thought if I used the SD card there was something that could work. Maybe NFS?

I just don't know if that will work with wireless and how I would get that to work I'm thinking an initramfs stuffed with wireless stuff?

Initramfs is used by the kernel. So you need both on the SD. That’s not exactly net booting...

I'm merely speculating this is what is required. As I want to use wireless in at least one case is it possible to have the root filesystem as a NFS share?

Or is this something that will cause more issues than its going to solve?
