VPN client comparisons/recommendations

Hi All,

I intend setting up a VPN client on my RPi but the number of clients available on Raspbian is actually quite bewildering. Although the package details mostly do indicate protocol support I can't see myself trying them all to gauge usability, performance & resource usage.

I'd be grateful for any pros and cons along those lines you could share here, especially performance and resource comparisons for the same protocol.

Any other recommendations or pointers to available resources would be equally welcome.

Many thanks,
François

I use the included RealVNC for one reason - it works.

The best thing is that by signing up for the free web account you do not have to open any ports in your router but can access up to five Pi computers from anywhere with internet connection (well U.K. wide at least  ).

It has its quirks (logging on using copy / paste being an issue today) and others are faster but I’ve used it at home and professionally for many years.

PiVPN was developed primarily for use on a Raspberry Pi SBC running Raspbian:

I Second piVPN, been running it for over a year without a hitch. Originally ran it on a pi zero w, but have switched it over to a model 2 B running pihole, pivpn, and RPI-Monitor. Easy setup, easy to manage, and works great.

I had a quick squizz at the pivpn script and it seems aimed at OpenVPN server install?

I'm looking for a VPN client :-).

Normally your client matches the server or is provided by the server team.

You can get general clients for protocols like IPSec etc but we would need to know the server capabilities.

The new(ish) and very decent kid on the block is Wireguard. Very quick and easy to set up, and much lower overheads than OpenVPN and suchlike. It's also set up to work at the kernel level, keeping things more secure and lighter.

Personally I've got a Pi3 at home running as a server for both (simple install set-up under DietPi) and works a treat.

Those benchmarks do look impressive, although I haven't seen it offered by providers that I'm considering.

Not having settled on a provider yet I'm in a bit of a Catch-22 there. I'm looking for a general multi-protocol client with which to evaluate potential providers.

Ultimate hardening isn't that important and anything from PPTP to OpenVPN should work. Those 2 do seem to be the most widely supported on commercial servers.

The list of providers narrowed to 2, both of which only support OpenVPN.

What fast and light-weight OpenVPN client is recommended?

Many thanks,
