Roaming WIFI using BTFon

Tue Nov 20, 2012 2:15 pm

I bought my Raspberry Pi fairly early on with the idea of building a roaming wifi point. I've spent hours looking for some inspiration and guidance because Linux doesn't come easy to me so here is my first post. I might also be searching for the wrong thing because I have trouble believing no one else has thought of this before.

At the moment I have a motorhome and go out some weekends but still want internet access. I have bought a longe range directional aerial similar to this http://www.faculty-x.net/NET-WL-USB-UTP2450-12.htm.

This is connected into my Windows laptop and I can log into any local BTFon network using a username and password all completely legal. I can also use connectify to allow the wireless card in the laptop to work as a wifi hotspot and allow anyone else in the local area to access internet as well. This does work fantastically well but I don't always want to have to switch the laptop on.

What I would like to do is replace the laptop with the Raspberry Pi. I'll plug the aerial into one USB port and a wifi dongle into the other. I would rather not have a screen but some indication if everything is working and the aerial is pointing in the right direction would be good.

Can some kind person show me where to start?
