I've set my Pi up as a wireless file server for use when travelling and blogged it :

Hi,
This is a brill idea, and I've been thinking the same. We have videos, music, photos etc which I would like to able to access from multiple platforms, so this sounds ideal.
The only difference for me would be the ability to access from outside the home network.

@Powerphil
Try sshfs (here is some good information https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSHFS) instead of samba.
