pi 3 b+ smb

Sat Mar 31, 2018 1:37 pm

i have a new pi set up as a smb server with a 1tb usb drive. when ever i try to copy larger files off it it fails, the problem only happens when the pi is connected via ethernet, if the pi is connected to wifi with the ethernet un-connected it works fine. i have used the same setup on a pi 3 for about a year with no issues so it seems specific to the new ethernet hardware which is the whole reason for me getting the newer board.

Maybe the discussion at viewtopic.php?f=63&t=208512 is relevant.

may well be the same i seem to get ok speed about 210 up and 300 down but the connection is not stable and fails if trying to copy larger files. capping the lan speed to 100mb makes it a bit better but its still iffy and a step back from a normal pi3 what a shame i now have a useless paperweight

We currently have an issue with large file transfers, which we are looking in to. It seems to be network related, ie depends on what sort of devices are being used to manage the network, which is why we haven't picked it up before - all our testing worked!

Have you tried adding the following line to config.txt?

yeah that didn't help it slowed the transfer speed down and was still not able to copy large files it would still fail part way through

eee should have no effect whatsoever on transfer speed. So that's a bit odd.

I think I'm seeing this or a related issue.

Raspberry Pi 3 B+ --- Kernel 4.14.34-v7+ #1110 SMP Mon Apr 16 15:18:51 BST

Wired Ethernet, 8TB disk on USB, Samba

Attempting to transfer a large repository from Windows 10, using Backvp2

When the backup program attempts to transfer a large file (over 80MB or so) the transfer freezes up, but so does all other network communication. A minute or two later my terminal windows will close and I'm able to reconnect. Once reconnected, I cannot see anything in /var/log that suggests what might have happened.

I have not yet tried switched to WiFi on the Pi.

Any thoughts ?

I reported in the 'lockup' thread that switching to Wifi seemed to get around the problem with the ethernet freezing, but then I ran smack into the other problem and the Pi crashed completely after a couple of hours of the samba job.

So today, I made a trip to my vendor and he replaced the Pi 3B+.

Unfortunately, this one seems to behave just like the last one, at least so far. The ethernet froze up after a few minutes of samba traffic.

I think I'm talking to myself in this thread, but ...

I applied the rpi-update recommended by jamesh in the lockups thread. The ethernet no longer freezes on samba transfers and the Pi stayed up working through the night.

No sure what the firmware update did ... but it seems to be the right thing for the problems I was seeing.

i have to say it is better after the update but it still not completely fixed, i was testing it and every so often a transfer fails when it fails i can use a second computer and still copy files off the pi but the computer the transfer fails on can no longer copy any more files until the pi is rebooted
