GPS module with serial interface to Raspberry Pi with an USB-Serial Port

Sun Feb 18, 2018 12:14 pm

Hi.. I m trying to connect a gps module to raspberry pi 3.. but the gps module has RS232 12V DB9 port and I have a USB-rs232 adapter. So I have a doubt if I can connect the module directly to pi's USB port using the adapter. Or do I require a voltage level shifter or something because the power supply to the gps module is 12V. Will it cause any damage to the Pi if i connect it directly through the adapter. ?

I going way out on a limb here, but it shouldn't cause any damage to the RPi if the adapter is working correctly.

NO GUARANTEE.

does the USB-serial adapter you are using use RS232 levels, and/or does the GPS module use RS232 levels (that is + and - 10Volt levels), (It should as its using ad DB09 port) if not you should use serial levels that match, as RS232 levels and "TTL" levels do not mix and match.

connecting RS232 levels to a USB-serial adapter that uses TTL (or 3V3 levels) might damage the serial adapter, but not the PI.

if your USB serial adapter doesn't have RS232 drivers, you must add them.

The GPS module uses RS232 + or -12v . Will the usb output be 12v or 5v?

And i have this adapter:
https://www.amazon.in/Pruthvik-trade-US ... dr18418-21

So Can I connect it directly? I m not using the usb-TTL converter

You should be able to connect it. USB is 5v.

yes, that USB-serial adapter has a DB9 connector, and obviously uses RS232 levels, so it should work fine with an RS232 compatible GPS module.

note that some USB-serial adapter use a fake Chinese serial interface IC, that may nor work with all Linux built in drivers, but you can safely try it.
