Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
Thanks, I'll try it later. I guess I didn't find it because I was searching for "hotspot" instead of "access point".

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
the nl80211 driver hasn't been compiled into hostapd.
At this point you should be able to use the nl80211 driver
As well, you'll probably want to add
ieee80211n=1 to your hostapd.conf file
Also possibly
wme_enabled=1
There is also ht_capab=.. You'll want to like at iw list and see what capabilities you can add that your card supports
mine says
ht_capab=[HT40-] [HT40+] [SHORT-GI-40] [RX-STBC1]
Good luck.
Code: Select all
wget http://w1.fi/releases/hostapd-2.0.tar.gz
tar -zxvf hostapd-2.0.tar.gz
cd hostapd-2.0
cd hostapd
(note, the following command copies defconfig to a dotfile .config)
cp defconfig .config
nano .config
uncomment the line: CONFIG_DRIVER_NL80211=Y
Also uncomment the line: CONFIG_IEEE80211N=y
make
If there are errors, you most likely need to install some packages
sudo apt-get install libnl-dev
sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
Then try again
make
sudo make install

ieee80211n=1 to your hostapd.conf file

Not sure what I actually have to do, to fix this:
Configuration file: /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
Line 2: invalid/unknown driver 'nl80211'
1 errors found in configuration file '/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf'
I have the WI-PI wi-fi dongle, which appear as:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter
and use the nl80211 driver if i'm not mistaken ??
-thx

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
I am trying to set up my Raspberry Pi 3 as a Wireless hotspot following the instructions here but without any success:
https://frillip.com/using-your-raspberr ... h-hostapd/
I get exactly the same error message as Kritharth. I've extensively Googled it and found several places where people report the same problem, but nobody ever replies with an answer or any clarification.
Can anybody help?

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
i read through this post:
https://frillip.com/using-your-raspberr ... h-hostapd/
and found that i needed to add this:
now i see my app ssid
and i also could be due to that i forgot to turn off my wlan in the interface:
https://frillip.com/using-your-raspberr ... h-hostapd/
and found that i needed to add this:
Code: Select all
driver=nl80211

and i also could be due to that i forgot to turn off my wlan in the interface:
Code: Select all
nano /etc/dhcpcd.conf
denyinterfaces wlan0
nano /etc/network/interfaces
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
address 172.24.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 172.24.1.0
broadcast 172.24.1.255
Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
I finally got my hotspot working on my Pi Zero with a RT5370 dongle, but my Nexus 5X (Android 6.0) refuses to connect to the hotspot because it has no internet access (this is intentional, I don't need internet access, nor do I have access where I'm going to use it). Does anyone know how I can solve this?
Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
i have dnsmasq so i can deliver the dns and have nginx to serve a simple web page. with these setup any device will think there is internet.

Does this work with the Pi 2? Does it have to be Raspbian?
Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
not sure if you can install the apps (dnsmasq etc..) than it should be no problem

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
The date of the comments are from a long time ago. I just started trying to use the raspberry pi as a replacement for many objects around my home, in cluding surveillance. I want to replace my router with a RP router. Using the intstructions I've been able to make a working hot spot. I using a R3pi and it works well.
I want to use a r3pi b plus and a tp-WN722N adapter. I will try to make the switch to the rp2 tomorrow.

That's much too old and should have expired years ago.

works with an RPi3

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
I have an old NOOBS card with wheezy and I'm trying to make it work with a pi 2. I'm using a TP-LINK TL-WN722N.GamingStar wrote:Does this work with the Pi 2? Does it have to be Raspbian?
I'm assuming non-systemd.
With the pi 3 the wrong wlan0 ip address comes up - 169.254.237.97
I'm doing something wrong or out of sequence.

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
Hi,
I probably am breaking in to this discussion, but is it possible to set up an access point on a Pi3 without routing it over ethernet to internet? I run a minecraft server on a Pi at home for my kid and his school mates. That connects to my router and the internet. It would be great if I could set the WiFi to AP and put it standalone at school, so they can connect to it wireless.
Best regards, Peter

Got this working on Raspberry Pi 3 using the steps here: https://frillip.com/using-your-raspberr ... h-hostapd/
This one uses dnsmasq and raspbian's own dhcpd. The other tutorial at http://elinux.org/RPI-Wireless-Hotspot uses udhcpd instead.

Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
I have followed the directions at http://elinux.org/RPI-Wireless-Hotspot#Instructions. I can get the access point to appear but when I try to connect with my phone and/or tablet it never progresses past "Obtaining IP address." I'm still a noob at some of this so I have no idea how to fix this. Any help?

That link assumes you will get your ip from somwhere further up the chain. If there is no dhcp overthere, you will never get an ip. I followed https://frillip.com/using-your-raspberr ... h-hostapd/ where hostapd will create the actual wireless access point and dnsmasq to provide a dhcp server, giving you ip numbers.
My link got me a working system.
Have fun,
Peter
Re: [Tutorial] Using the RasPi as a WiFi hostspot (8 Nov 12)
following this guide and failing... rpi is either not broadcasting or i do not know the problem. i did everything step by step, nothing works. figured might be onboard wifi module so i bought ralink 5572, as it shows up as wlan1 i configured everything accordingly... still no joy. anyone can help out? although when i use start service hostapd udhcpd there are no errors popping up, which makes it so much harder to determine what is going on...
