Rpi as Wifi AP in isolated private network

:D Folks,
I have a question about creating a standalone Intranet (private wireless network with any connection to public internet) with Rpi
as the WiFi Access point

I had followed all the instructions given in https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... s-point.md
and the access point came up. Using the WiFi signals I am able to connect to the new access point through which I was able to access the public internet.

Now my next step is to disconnect RPi from the public internet, so I disconnected the ethernet cable from Rpi and rebooted it.
I connected few computers to the Rpi Access point. They were all able to authenticate and connect.

Now comes the problem.
The computers connected to Rpi Access point is not able an IP address from Rpi. I understand than the dnsmasq is the responsible for giving IP address to the computers. But for some reason this is not working. During the connection process, I Can see the message "Obtaining IP address" and it waits after some time it times out.

Not able to figure out what is going wrong here. When I connect the Ethernet cable back, all computers all get IP address

Going one step deeper I found computers are getting IP address from a DHCP server outside (Rpi) that is DHCP server within my main Wireless network. (not from DNSmasq)

1. To debug futhrer, I checked the syslog files I see some issues, not able to understand what exactly the problem is
2. Checked the dnsmasq.cong using dnsmasq -test option and it showing everything OK
3. As per the instructions I tried to ssh [email protected] and this is not reachable, this we can understand.

I am attaching the Syslog files as a separate file can any give me a clue to debug this issue ?

If you look at one page

You can see three options

1. PIXEL Desktop.
A guide to setting up wireless networking using the PIXEL desktop.

2.Command line.
A guide to setting up wireless networking from the command line.

3.Access point.
A guide to setting the Raspberry Pi up as an access point, and as a internet sharing device.

Look at the item no 3 what does it say ""setting up Rpi as internet sharing device"" This is the link
I had clicked and it took me to

This is what exactly I had followed and my Rpi works as internet sharing device very well but, it does not create a stand alone network that is exactly my problem. As per my analysis in the stand alone mode the dnsmasq is suppose to give IP address to computer, that is not happening. This is what I am trying to debug.

Maybe the webpage has changed recently...

When I look at https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /wireless/ the text with the final option says:
A guide to setting the Raspberry Pi up as an access point, and as a internet sharing device.
The comma in that text looks significant.

In the linked resource the first section is titled
SETTING UP A RASPBERRY PI AS AN ACCESS POINT IN A STANDALONE NETWORK
That seems to be what you need to do.

The second section of the resource is titled
USING THE RASPBERRY PI AS AN ACCESS POINT TO SHARE AN INTERNET CONNECTION
Although you have no need to do so, it seems you may have also followed this part of the resource, because you would not have internet connectivity otherwise. But doing so has probably 'broken' the stand-alone functionality that you were hoping for.

I suggest a fresh start, re-implement the stand-alone access point, and then Stop without going on to the Internet Sharing section.

Folks,

Thanks a lot to all who helped me, with access point.

I was able to setup Rpi as access point in the stand alone network, outside my home without access to public internet. I had tested it for two days and it is working very well.

I did only the first portion and that was it

It worked fine.

Earlier I did the second section too and look like if I do the section section, thinking that once I remove the ethernet cable it will become a stand alone network. I understood that it does not work that way, that was the wrong assumption I had made
