So for my senior project my professon wants to be able to send and receive data from the pi with and device around the world. I have no networking knowledge. Is there an easy way of doing this or is it a lost cause?

You can connect through the Internet. There are many posts on this.
* Connect direct or through a router. A router is safer and easier.
* You need an IP address, either fixed by your ISP or using a substitute. Fixed IP addresses are usually through wired connections, not wireless.
* You need a protocol for the connection, HTTPS, UDP, etc. The protocol depends on the type of data. what type of data?

I'm puzzled why your professor or you or both thought that was a suitable project for someone who has no networking knowledge.

Welcome to the forums. Maybe your supervisor has identified a gap in your knowledge and has set this project to encourage you to plug that gap?
It is easy. But you will need to improve your background knowledge. It is not a lost cause. It is happening on Raspberry Pis all the time.

This may/may not be a good start.
There are loads of example on this very site the foundation has made, just a pain to find most of the time unless you already know where to look.
Especially on a mobile device.
