Every linux kernel IS a firewall, by definition, controllable via iptables.

... but, classically, the PI cannot be a firewall because it only has one interface that is wired. That said, it can be a sort-of-firewall (router-bridge) between a wireless and wired network.

It can also be setup to be a VPN server, and kind of doorway (similar to a firewall).

What do you really have in mind here ?

You need a 2nd LAN.
May be a wired usb lan
Or a wireless usb wlan

Next, you can find a distribution like IPFire for example. Webinterface to admin everything needed by a human...
If you own a RPi3 with wlan, be sure the wlan driver in IPFire is ok to have wifi working...
ipfire.org

Humm about ipfire.org, I'm reading Raspberry Pi hardware is sadly ok only for RPi v1...

Have you find a distribution with all those features ?
GUI... webinterface to admin services...
