IRC Receiver with a thermal printer?

Hi there,

I'm now an A Level Computer Science student, and wondering if I can get the Raspberry Pi (B rev2) to connect to a Pipsta thermal printer, and print a live feed from an IRC channel.

I don't actually have a Pipsta (yet), but would like to think it's possible (preferably using python) to automate this.

I think the general idea I have at the moment is to get some sort of IRC log from a text file (not sure how I'd do this),
Then using python, continuously check if the file has text in, then print this text, then clearing the text file.

I'm OK with the python, it's the IRC part I'm not sure about.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks!

The hardware is the easy part.

You should start with a python library https://pypi.python.org/pypi/irc to read your IRC channel.
https://github.com/jaraco/irc
https://pythonhosted.org/irc

Before using that get familiar with IRC by installing irssi with sudo apt-get install irssi because that's a nice sane IRC client that runs in an LXTerminal (or from the command line).
