Samba server restart? "No such file or directory"

Thu Jan 28, 2016 2:03 am

So I've been working on this for a day or so with no luck and Google has failed me.
I'm simply trying to get Samba working on my Raspian Pi. I believe I have correctly installed Samba, edited the "smb.cnf" file per typical instructions and now am trying to restart Samba - to no avail.

I've tried:
sudo service samba restart
sudo service smb restart
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

all to no avail. I'm really confused as I believe that using Samba on a new Raspian image is supposed to be quite simple.

I also tried: "sudo service samba status" and get:
"samba.service
Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
Acdtive: inactive (dead)

Any ideas?

I've played with samba a little on the Jessie Lite distribution, and here are some of my notes, so maybe this will help:

Enable & start the service (i.e. survive reboots):
$ sudo systemctl enable smbd
$ sudo systemctl enable nmbd
$ sudo systemctl start smbd
$ sudo systemctl start nmbd
Of course do the opposite of above to stop it (i.e. 'stop' and 'disable').

Here are some other helpful commands:
$ sudo systemctl status smbd
$ sudo systemctl status nmbd
$ sudo systemctl list-units | grep "smbd\|nmbd\|samba"

Thanks JM - I'll give those a try tonight.

I restart samba with this command:
/etc/init.d/samba restart

Otherwise, I get the same error message. It's a path thing I think.
