you will need to add hole in your firewall of your router

I think you will need to configure your boundary router to work with one of the dynamic DNS providers, assuming that like most of us you are given a dynamic IP address by your network provider. I persuaded my ADSL router to work with no-ip and opened port 80 so that I could use my RPi as a very simple webserver.

Dyndns is free - at least for my basic usage.

No, it was free, now you can not create a free account anymore

Dynamic ip-adresses may not be very dynamic really. It depends on the provider. I believe I have had the same "dynamic" IP-adress the last 6 months or so.

Alternatively, if dyndns is not free anymore, and that is all the router supplies, you might find an alternative and install that on the raspberry instead.

My working idea about dyndns (and similar services) would be as follows
1) the raspberry client sends "messages" to the server now and then. This message will automatically have the current dynamic ip-adress (this is added by the router that knows the adress).
2) a server on a "well-known adress" saves the info in a database
3) your web client (or whatever) calls the "well-know adress" and is redirected to the raspberry

There are of course details and details but conceptually it is simple.

Actually, i figured out i was sitting behind 2 routers
what was a misfortune in the beginning , is now a bless.
as my second router is a fritz!box, i am able to use no-ip.com as a dyndns provider
no my owncloud is running perfectly , and i have a 100 gb cloud , reachable from everywhere , WUHU !
Thanks a lot guys
p.s. , my dynamic ip changes up to 2 times a day, so i really had to use a dyndns .

@ghellquist

I've implemented a cheap , lazily coded noip service on my own.
PHP , Perl , curl , traceroute and cron.
Works like a charm . Gotta love UNIX tools (especially when they are already available).

It's only dependant on Googles public DNS and the server where my PHP script is stored.
Is there any way to know when your external IP changed without checking periodically ?

Dynu dynamic DNS allows you to download the client and manage as many accounts as you like. I have been using it for a year or so. It is stable and pretty fast.
