RPi Workhorse - Moving it to WiFi

Tue Aug 11, 2015 10:36 am

Hi Guys,

Over the past week i have managed to setup my pi running open VPN, SABnzbd, and sharing over Samba and UPNP on my home network and Airplay audio receiver. At the moment it's coping admiralty well i'm pleased to report.

however i'd like to swap it to a WiFi connection in a room where it is less likely to be switched off accidentally, will it still be possible to run all the above over WiFi? The Pi itself is one of the early first generations 256mb so i'll be using a plug-in WiFi dongle.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A network interface is a network interface.

No reason why it shouldn't work, although local conditions might reduce the link quality or speed.

Try it and see.

So my follow-up question,

To test this out, how would i go about making the change, I'm guessing i need to make a lot of changes in the system?

Do i need to re-generate all my keys etc?

Many Thanks

Wifi is much worse than ethernet,
I get about 1/3 the speed on wifi (3 meg/sec) compared to 10meg/sec on ethernet.

I doubt you have to change much at all in your setup.

No.

An IPv4 network connection is an IPv4 network connection regardless of the technology that provides it. All your applications should be unaware if the RPi is wired or wireless.
