"Cloud" means a lot of different things to different people, as does a "cloud server", so you'd need to be a bit more specific about what you want to actually do. However, for something like sharing files over the Internet, one option would be using something like owncloud to host files. I've not done it personally, but know people who have.
There are a number of tutorials around, take a look at :
https://blog.adafruit.com/2014/11/21/12 ... spberrypi/

Although this will work fine for personal use, it's not particularly scalable due to the relatively limited resources of the Pi. A "real" cloud system would be able to automatically scale the various resources such as CPU, network bandwidth, storage IOPS in response to user load, scaling them up during busy periods and down when demand falls, which is why providers like Microsoft with Azure, Amazon with AWS and others have heavily invested so much in building massive infrastructure and software stacks to support "bursty" loads.

The whole idea of cloud is to only pay for resources when you need them, rather than have expensive servers sitting idle for a lot of the time, with no upfront investment needed for hardware, which is why they can be very attractive for tech start-ups. The data centers tend to have very reliable power sources, networking, cooling and security, something that is quite expensive to do from scratch.

Thank you joe.
Well, actually, it is aimed to use the device as personal. Specially targeted to the students. I have just visited the link you have given to me. Is it ok to do the project with OwnCloud 8.0?

Should be pretty much the same, with some GUI changes. The only thing that might get you is any new dependencies, but hopefully there shouldn't be. You could do 7 first, then upgrade, but probably easiest to see how far you get with 8 first.

Probably obvious, but if you are going to have anything Internet facing, then it's well worth ensuring that everything is up to date distribution wise and that you don't store anything you aren't prepared to lose or be found by others. This isn't a criticism of OwnCloud, any net system is vulnerable and it's very hard to stop the determined, no matter how unimportant or anonymous your servers might be. There are bots that will try default logons / flaws for popular systems and securing systems is really hard. Even if you're on a LAN, there's always some bright spark who'll have a go.

:) yes, there will be an antivirus software ( Free Version) and other security tools for protection of the resources.

Hi Binod

Owncloud 8 works well on my Pi 2 and I wrote up the install procedure here:

Hi!

We've recently compiled Emit Cloud (OwnCloud alternative) for Raspberry pi.
If you are interested, you can check our blog post: http://blog.biokoda.com/post/1125043077 ... spberry-pi

If you're looking for something more performant than OwnCloud take a look at Nimbus - there is an online demo here http://bit.ly/1FbS6sD. Really easy to install too, instructions are on their website (http://cloudnimbus.org).

It's still in beta but very fast and has a ton of features.
