Power USB wireless dongles

Tue Oct 30, 2012 1:05 am

I read that Raspberry PI is capable of powering 100 mA per port, while most dongles use much more than that.

I also read that many use wifi dongles without problems.

How's that possible? Everyone using external powered USB host?

The newer Raspberry Pis don't have that limitation anymore.
The older ones did due to the polyfuses

Plus, the cheap dongles do NOT use more than 100mA and work just fine on an unmodified 'pi V1.

Do you mean usb can output more than 100mA? I tried to connect samsung galaxy s III through usb, and it wasn't recognized at all (tailing and lsusb did not react at all)

EDIT: I'm using model B with 512mb RAM, with 1,2A 5V power supply (Nokia N900 charger)

Did the phone start charging ?
Was the phone in debug mode ?
Have you activated the 'disk drive' mode of the phone ?
