What Is "Partition Table Type" in GParted?

Fri Jul 30, 2021 12:10 pm

I have a blank Seagate IronWolf 125 NAS SSD with 500 GB of rated capacity. I want to format it so that it will work well with my Pi4B 8 GiB for a server project. When I'm about to format it in GParted which option when prompted should I choose in "Partition Table Type" if I want to have the drive using EXT4 (which I understand is the best file system for most GNU/Linux distros)?
Helpful answers are appreciated.
I usually respond to Tweets directed at me.

At 500GB you can use either MBR or GPT. GPT is only needed for drive over 2TB. Which you use has no effect on which file systems you can format partitions to.

As for the partition name and label options are they similar in function as when I format a blank drive in Windows 10?
So for this operation which option is closest to "Volume Label" in Windows 10? Do I need to fill out the "Label" field?

Label is optional and yes. Please read the docs for parted and gparted.
