Wifi project

Sat Apr 10, 2021 7:41 am

I'm working on a project where am stuck with unstable server and devices.

Project requires users travelling in railway to connect specific app which comes with pre loaded video and music contents. Without consuming network service provider data users can connect to wifi connected within the railway coaches and login to stream the contents.

So need advice if rasp pi can help me with loading debian on it and HDD connected on it will have pre loaded contents. Should have able to provide DHCP to the users. Access Point will be providing wireless network so should have lan port. If we have multiple coaches approx 4-5 coacher per train then how should be the network design & architecture should be?

Not clear what you are asking.

Are you wanting the RPi to have the HDD and act as media server and DHCP server with ethernet connection to separate Wi-Fi Access Point(s) or (as epoch1970 seems to have assumed) the RPi(s) will be the Wi-Fi AP(s)?

How many simultaneous users do you expect to have and what average bit rate of the content?

That's correct.

I need debian installed on SSD and Content (Movies/Songs) loaded on HDD.

As you said it to act as media server and DHCP server with ethernet connection to separate Wi-Fi Access Point(s).

It will have 2 access points wired and users max can stretch to 110-125 per coach.

Content can be downloaded as well as can be streamed which is 1080P high resolution media content.

I'm planning to design a test unit with UBNT Wifi access points but am not sure with rasp setup i.e. need raspi module, should have 2/3/4/5G connectivity for raspi, SSD and HDD connectivity & a lan port.

So that's 4 coaches * 110 users per coach = about 440 users. Potentially streaming 1080 video content?

I'm not going to attempt the 'back of an envelope' maths involved in that - my hunch is that is a big ask.

I would suggest just putting one RPi4B-8 on a development network and see whether its Gigabit network interface can keep up with that demand. Your experience will be worth more than advice provided here. And you can use the write-up of your tests as part of the project submission.

I'll not say that streaming is major focus of interest.

App contains feature to download and watch later which most of users will perform. So my question here is:
How can I Get raspi configured to stay connected using LTE 2-5G kit?
Can it manage SSD for OS and HDD for content? If yes then can I get a setup plan or bit more in detail explanation.
Wifi part I've expertise on so I don't think I need much info on that part.

But there is one more major issue in this setup which can be discussed once I understand the above mention requirement.

Bonjour,
Je travail sur un projet similaire. J'ai un pi 4B et j'utilise sa carte wifi avec hostapd. Mais je suis limité à 8 utilisateurs sisimultané. Si quelqu'un peut m'aider?

Merci d'avance...

Is there a option to connect 2 lan device to raspi 4b 8Gb model? Any external hardware solution?

An Ethernet switch?

Yes ethernet port. Need 2 lan port to connect 2 Access Points.

The answer to that requirement is to use an Ethernet switch. As suggested.

Ethernet Switch is not a solution. Raspi will be mounted on the roof of the coach and hence adding a switch is not a suitable solution so looking for other options. As just needed something which can forward DHCP to 2 AP's connected wired.

You have (twice) been offered 'an external hardware solution'.

If you can mount an RPi, why not a small switch?

Space is concern over here and cannot use multiple power supply to power up multiple units. As have only 1 power source which powers up rasp pi and AP. As 2nd AP will be powered up using the PoE source of 1st AP. Hence cannot add a switch and another MCB as options are very limited with us.

I've posted my requirement here to get something very concrete in terms of hardware that meets my requirement. As being familiar with Linux but I'm no pro so require guidance before I invest in anything. It would be helpful if experts provide some help here or offline too.

Help with what? Third party hardware you told nothing about?
There are no Pi with 2 physical Ethernet ports. That we all know.

Good luck with that. It is for a Pi Compute Module 4, not a Pi 4B.

Can't you just use a USB Ethernet adaptor?

Actually USB adapter should be a great option. But does it comes with 1Gbps interface? Never used one..

Yes, you can get Gb USB adaptors. Make sure it is USB3 and use it in one of the Pi's USB3 ports, otherwise you will only achieve around 400Mb/s even though the connection will be 1Gb/s
