hostapd crashing with modmypi long range wifi dongle after some time

Mon Sep 14, 2020 10:57 am

Hi All,

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB with one of these (https://core-electronics.com.au/modmypi ... tenna.html) modmypi long range wireless adapters to use as an AP for a project I'm working on.

My hostapd configuration file under

Code: Select all

/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
looks like the following:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
auth_algs=1
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
ssid=<REDACTED>
channel=7
hw_mode=g
wpa_passphrase=<REDACTED>
interface=wlan1
wpa=2
wpa_pairwise=CCMP
country_code=AU
ignore_broadcast_ssid=0
disassoc_low_ack=0
ctrl_interface=/var/run/hostapd
It works fine for a period of time (~12+ hours it would seem) but eventually dies as if the adapter has been removed from the system.

It is a RT3070 based chipset and registers under the

Code: Select all

rt2800
driver

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 001 Device 072: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
The modules are loaded:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsmod | grep rt2
rt2800usb              28672  0
rt2800lib             114688  1 rt2800usb
rt2x00usb              24576  1 rt2800usb
rt2x00lib              57344  3 rt2800lib,rt2800usb,rt2x00usb
mac80211              729088  3 rt2800lib,rt2x00lib,rt2x00usb
crc_ccitt              16384  1 rt2800lib
cfg80211              679936  3 rt2x00lib,mac80211,brcmfmac
I have checked

Code: Select all

/var/log/*
for any reference to why this adapter (wlan1) is having issues with hostapd but am having a hard time pinpointing the root cause and fixing it permanently.

Looking forward to any pointers.

Hi All,

I have also tried adding a cron job to ensure that the power saving mode is constantly being disabled as per the following:

Code: Select all

*/5 * * * * sudo iwconfig wlan1 power off
I read elsewhere that some adapters will inadvertently have their power management modified on the fly and that you can configure them as a module option, I did not see this as an option for the rt2800 modules.

If anyone can provide any form of assistance that would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!
