Neatest way to attach 2x USB HDD’s

Mon Jan 13, 2020 2:45 pm

Hello,

What’s the neatest and best way to attach a pair of external disks to my pi 3b+ ?
I’d like to keep things small (and low power) so 2.5” drives are what I’m looking at.
I understand the pi won’t power two spinnies at the same time particularly well. Is a powered hub my only option? Is there such a thing as a dual 2.5” hdd enclosure I could put some naked drives in to that will let me mount each disk separately? Are there even any pi cases with hdd caddies - perhaps a 3 bay I could slot the pi in to as well?

TIA

this is my early attempt at connecting 2xUSB HDDs to RPi2Bv1.2 (using same SoC as RPi3B)

1 x 2TB Seagate HDD, 1 x 1TB Marshall HDD, both in Orico Clear Case USB3.0
no USB hub, direct connection to RPi's USB hubs
powered by 5v 3.0A PSU
boot up from microSD (a must for this type of system)

used this setup for 6 months.... worked fine...

tested to stream 1080p 5.1ch encoded videos (5.5GB file size) to 4 other media players back then (file accessed from 2TB HDD).

Not to be rude, but that’s a little messier than I’m after. Cool that it works without additional power though. I guess both disks aren’t super-active simultaneously for this to work consistently (?)

none taken... :D

as mentioned... it was my first attempt... to check out everything I wanted to test, using readily available items in my room.
concurrent access was one disk at a time...

I've since replaced the 1 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB with 1 x 4TB as seen in below

still the same RPi2Bv1.2
been using for the last 10 months....

there is a neater one, this time based on RPi4B-2G but using 3.5" drives.

Hi

do you have already buy your HDD ?

if no , you can look at m2 SSD , it depends on what you want to do .

it is more little than HDD 2.5" , and need less power than others HDDs.

HDD example here :https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07XJ9 ... UTF8&psc=1

this is working with pi3B ! ( boot and reboot without SD card ! ) ;)
