VPN and MAC addresses

Tue Dec 03, 2019 2:40 pm

I often scan Facebook for news. Many posts are from our local newspaper. It seems that the newspaper site keeps track of how many times you read their articles and imposes a limit as to how many times you can read them without buying a subscription to the paper. So I wonder, how does the paper know how many times you have accessed their site? Do they log your IP address? Do they log your computer MAC address, although I read that that is not available, or do they use cookies? Does anybody know?

It seems that many papers are starting to charge for reading their posts.

So what do I do? VPM is supposed to hide the IP. I tried this but this didn't seem to work. I read that the MAC address of the computer does not go past your local router. Now I am thinking about cookies. Seems like the paper could just be inserting an access count into a cookie.

Click on the little shield icon near the address bar in your browser.
You'll see the myriad of tracking domains modern websites use for "analytics".
