VNC Connection Problems.

Fri Nov 08, 2019 9:32 pm

I have four RPis. Two are 4s, one is a 3B+ and one is a 3. The RPi3 runs Stretch and the others run Buster. All have VNC enabled. I also have a couple of Windows 10 PCs. On my primary PC, I can connect to any RPi with VNC Viewer after a fresh boot of the PC. Later if I open the VNC Viewer and click on one of the RPis, it won't open the connect window. If I reboot, I can make a connection for a few minutes. Later it will quit opening the connect window. On another PC in another room, it works all the time. My current workaround is to connect to the other PC via TeamViewer and have that PC connect using the VNC Viewer.

Sounds like a problem with your windows machine.

Are there WIndows apps that would cause a problem with VNC Viewer? This is something that just started about a week ago. I'm not aware of any changes I've made to the PC.

Not sure if it works with all Windows VNC viewers, but can you connect to them all if you use their IP addresses instead of names?

try a
telnet [raspberry ip] 5900
after vnc stops working
if you get a black screen then networking is fine
You can use sfc /scannow to check for problems with windows image

dorian-ny, are those entered into VNC where you would normally enter an IP address? If so, I did and they didn't do anything.

I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the latest VNC Viewer. Remember, everything still works on my old PC and it was working on this computer until a week or so ago.

dorian-ny, I got an error message "The term 'telnet' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program."

The sfc /scannow: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. The log is beyond my understanding. I'll do a windows repair to see if that corrects the problem.

I can still do Putty access and I can stream an Arducam day/night camera installed on the RPi 3B+ in a browser.

Thanks for your response.

You have to install telnet from control-panel -> programs and features -> Turn windows features on/off

dorian-ny, I just did a Windows reinstall - keeping files. I wait to see if that fixed the problem before I pursue any other recourse. T scan that said I had corrupted files was a clue that I need a reinstall. I hope I don't have to wipe the disk and reinstall all my apps. I do have my data on separate drives.

It failed again and I installed the telnet. When I ran it in Powershell , I got a screen with RFB 005.000 on the top.

You said that the two Windows systems are in different rooms. Have you verified that it's not a difference in the networks between the two rooms? If they're connected via wifi, how are the signal strengths in each? If they're hardwired, are they both connected to the same network device (switch or router)?

Follow bls suggestion and if connection is strong, then try testing a different vnc client. There are at least a dozen or so

Both a hardwired. My primary computer is connected directly to the router. The other computer is connected via a switch. The one that doesn't have a problem is connected with a switch that is connected to the router. The problem PC has the direct to the router connection. Any VNC recommendations?

What VNC viewer are you using on Windows? RealVNC or something else?

I've been using RealVNC since it is included with Raspbian. I have Teamviewer on my PCs and I just added it to one of my RPis and it works. Since it's an option that works., I don't think I'll spend any more time on the RealVNC problem. The problem with teamviewer is they put a small session window on the viewer. Thanks again for your input. The problem is that I don't have a KB and monitor connected to the RPis.

vnc is a protocol.
You don't have to replace the vnc server on the raspberry to use a different vnc client on windows

Thanks, I'll check some others. TeamViewer must be different. It works on the RPi 4s, but older Pis slow down so much that nothing can get done. What about Windows Remote Desktop?
