[solved] WIFI driver for RTL8811AU 5GHz outdoor channels

Thu Nov 01, 2018 8:41 pm

I followed Mr. Engman's instructions from this post: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=178405 After calling install-wifi, magically my WIFI stick Logilink WL0238 (RTL8811AU) worked. Even AP mode is possible and it works like charm. However, it seems serveral advanced features won't work.
Is there a chance to gain more functionality? The Logilink features a SMA connector, perfect for using external patch antennas for directional links.

No automatic channel selection, obviously only channels 36, 40, 44, 48 are selectable
TPC, DFS not working?
Speed limited to 54MBit, possibly only 802.11a supported (missing the c in ac)?

OK, after having tried outdoor 5GHz channels with a different hardware based on rt5572 chip with no success, I stumbled across the hostapd wiki. Result:
All channels other than 36, 40, 44, and 48 including all outdoor channels require frequency management, DFS. There are only three drivers for Atheros hardware existing supporting DFS. All of them are PCI chips.

So no outdoor AP functionality at all wil take place with the Pi to date.
