Install OSMC or OpenELEC. Both are uncomplicated yet powerful mediacentres based on Kodi.

Just make sure you get a recent release of Openelec. Go to their site to download it as I think the one on the Pi site is an older version (4.0.5)..
I put Openelec 5.0.1 on my Pi 2 and it worked brilliantly. You should be fine plugging your hard drive directly into the Pi. I have my media on a NAS so never used a drive directly plugged in.
When you add your movie folder to the library in Openelec, have a look at movie scrapers. I used the TMDB scraper and it will get information and pics (movie posters) for all your movies and organise them so you can search by year, movie type, actors etc..
Topguy might be onto something. Maybe the Pi is not able to power the drive. Have you got a powered USB hub to could stick in between the Pi and the hard drive?

are you able to use the command line or enable config options for the RPI ?

WARNING - some parts of this post may be erroneous YMMV
You probably need to configure your Pi2 USB ports to output more current, as you are powering your 1TB USB drive directly from it. By default it is only 600mA.
To increase the total maximum current output to 1.2A, you need to edit /boot/config.txt and add the line:
max_usb_current=1

and add the line shown in the previous post. Ctrl-X to save and exit, then reboot.
