XBMC is a great media centre.
There are currently 3 ways to get this (i think):

- Raspbmc
- openelec
- install as an application in debian (?)

I'd suggest them in that order, but definitely try both the first 2 options as you may prefer one over the other depending on your setup (remotes, wifi, external hard drives etc)

Raspbmc is great, works flawlessly with my USB hdd and all USB sticks I tried, can't say on websites but files on your local network or media servers are recognized and play just fine.

Sadly some assholes are currently running a DDOS attack against the official Website and you can't get the installer.

yes to audio over HDMI

no to torrents the Pi people don't want to be associated with Pirated things that tend to follow torrent information so i don't think people will post details here.

well im not saying they are associated, and torrents dont mean illegal.

i use it to download TV shows which are legal to download via torrent.

just because they ARE used for illegal perpouses doesnt meant that the word torrent or its use immediatly assumes illegal activity

Nothing wrong with torrents.

Yes you can use Audio over HDMI with OpenELEC and RaspBMC. You can even pass through 7.1 DTS and 7.1 Dolby Digital (AC3) audio over HDMI to an AV Receiver. It can decode the DD or DTS audio on the Pi CPU, but its slow (software decode).

...quite! Even the RPi foundation use torrents as a method of distributing the pi's OS's - god forbid :D
