Complex RasberryPi Build Car Media Center

Mon Apr 28, 2014 3:51 am

This will be my first build with a rasberrypi and I'm gonna be ambitious.

We want to build a media center for a child in the back of the car. I want a screen on the back of the seat to display the media and I was thinking of doing xbmc on an ipad or perhaps doing a rasberrypi and a dc powered screen. Which would be best?

Secondly, and here is the hard part. I would like to use something similar to maybe the size of an iPhone mounted in the front of the car to control what is playing on the screen in the back. So at a red light or on long road trips the front seat will have control over the back display.

Now for the front if I could find a decent sized touch screen I would throw it on a rasberry pi and hopefully find an xbmc remote application(is there such a thing), as well as use some really cool examples I've found for making it a GPS as well as a display for a rear view camera. Do you think this is all possible? Can this all be done on the pi?

or am I just getting crazy complicated?

The problems are
- power : you always need to ensure a clean software shutdown ,
something like a UPS could be necessary. Furthermore
car electricity is very noisy , somebody else might
comment on real-world implications of that.
- cabling : that is going to be a big mess
- network : for the remote control , except you can find
somebody who details a setup with an USB based
one ( i tweaked one to work nicely on Raspbian
but never bothered with XBMC which you most
propably want)
- touchscreen : get one with explicit Raspberry Pi source code
AND installation instructions (sorry , those screens
are expensive). Anything else and you will be in
for a LOT of pain.

Have a look at http://hdmipi.com (HDMIPI) with your RPi running http://www.raspbmc.com (RaspBMC) using the XBMC Remote from the Apple APP Store.

I'm just waiting for the delivery of the HDMIPI.

The HDMIPi is not a touchscreen , but has great specs for
a low price , i've heard.

I did a car rig. A place called mausberry circuits makes a bunch od pi stuff. I got a switch that wires in nicely for power & shuts down clean with the ignition...
