OpenELEC Testbuilds

Hi all,
i open this thread to provide infos and get reports about new OpenELEC testbuilds.
http://sources.openelec.tv/tmp/image/op ... 93.tar.bz2
to update a older build without reinstalling:
http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title ... g_OpenELEC
I have created a new build to test a more actual kernel based on bootc's work. He wants to get reports how well this kernel works for the "masses", what are the problems and if it runs stable. This kernel is based on the active developed kernel "linux-3.2.18".
After some tests here with this kernel i have noticed this kernel provides us a much better data transferrate from SDcards. for example:
- Kernel 3.1.10 (original):
Code: Select all
root ~ # sync; rm testing; sync; time ( dd if=/dev/zero of=testing bs=16k count=10000; sync)
10000+0 records in
10000+0 records out
163840000 bytes (156.3MB) copied, 38.149376 seconds, 4.1MB/s
real 0m39.139s
user 0m0.060s
sys 0m3.420s
- Kernel 3.2.18 (new):
Code: Select all
root ~ # sync; rm testing; sync; time ( dd if=/dev/zero of=testing bs=16k count=10000; sync)
10000+0 records in
10000+0 records out
163840000 bytes (156.3MB) copied, 21.412055 seconds, 7.3MB/s
real 0m23.431s
user 0m0.060s
sys 0m3.440s
as you see, writing on the SDcard is around 2 times faster (at least here for me).
If you test this build via shh for mmc errors and slowdowns while booting with (OpenELEC provides Timestamps for every line)
you maybe will also notice a faster startup from kernel and certain services like:
- End of kernel start:
Kernel 3.1.10:
Code: Select all
[ 2.913671] Freeing init memory: 3728K
Kernel 3.2.18:
Code: Select all
[ 1.095703] Freeing init memory: 3740K
(this means (here) the kernel starts in 1s sec instead 3 sec.)
- or starting of service "udev"
Kernel 3.1.10:
Code: Select all
>[ 6.948481] udevd[717]: starting version 184
Kernel 3.2.18:
Code: Select all
>[ 3.620709] udevd[736]: starting version 184
(another 3.3 sec improvenment here)
- or beginning to start XBMC:
Kernel 3.1.10:
Code: Select all
[ 9.901918] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x30
Kernel 3.2.18:
Code: Select all
[ 6.121219] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x30
(what i should say?)
Additionally we have updated XBMC on the latest code with merges from XBMC-master and changes made by Gimli:
- The wrong thumbnail colors should be fixed
- there are much changes in in the XBMC which needs to resetup your audio hardware, it is important to remove your "guisettings.xml" before if you upgrade from a earlyer build, reboot and resetup your audio device:
Code: Select all
rm -rf /storage/.xbmc/userdata/guisettings.xml
- i have tried a WLAN stick with this build based on the "r8712u" wlan driver which work very well here (but is not fast enough to stream 1080p movies over samba)
- mounting external USB drives works here too
many thanks to Gimli and bootc for the great work.
let me know how it works for you
Stephan

I propose that this become the OFFICIAL builds thread, instead of having new threads all over the place (found another two).

Hi...
I've tested 'r11193' and have one problem..
I have this problem with my own builds to...
I cant play some videos, only get audio...
mp4 (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(avc1)) : works
avi (MPEG-4 Video (XVID)) : don't work, only sound
with error message:
ERROR: COMXCoreComponent::GetParameter - OMX.broadcom.video_decode failed with omx_err(0x8000100e)
This have worked before (build r11170)
I made r11186 with no video, only sound (same as above)..
Thanx!
/Nisse

Reboot no longer works properly from the gui, only from the command-line.

Hi,
Another short update (r11198):
http://sources.openelec.tv/tmp/image/op ... 98.tar.bz2
to update a older build without reinstalling:
http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title ... g_OpenELEC
- updated rtmpdump, so some more rtmp related addons should work (like the german ZDF.de addon)
- some more optimizations to lower the CPU usage while beeing in the GUI (with disabled RSS feed CPU usage can go down to around 3%)

hi there,
I build openelec from source on 30th may. It is very slow on my raspberry pi and I am wondering if that's normal or if there's something wrong with my components.
I use 5 volt 1 A powersource and a 4 gig class 4 sd card from kingston.
yes it can stream 1080p video from network. (powered external drive is not detected)
yes it can install youtube add-on and again stream 1080p video from it.
but surfing thru menu is a real pain. it takes about 5 seconds from one menu to the next and a lot of mouse-clicks to finally start up something.
Of course it's beta and you don't hear me complaining about the fantastic work of the coders, but I was just wondering: is this normal or should I try to get a stronger powersource and different sd-card?
I am a little less confident that xbmc (openelec and raspbmc) will work perfect in the future, please take away my doubts.

Hi,
Thanks sraue for the builds.
I want to ask if the r8712u is working with these builds, then the realtek 8192cu based (e.g. 8188cus) wifi dongles should work in theory?
Because I can see some modules named rtl8192cu and rtl8192c, but I can't get it to work with the latest test build.

here my wlan stick works with the r8712u driver, dont have tested others... can you connect to lan and look if you have a wlan0 device with "ifconfig"?

There is no wlan0 device.
By the way this is the Edimax EW-7811Un nano adapter and I think most of the people here want to use their RPi with this adapter because of its small size.
So it would be great if it could be supported.
Thanks

can you paste /var/log/messages and the lsmod out with connected stick (and lan cable):
Code: Select all
paste /var/log/messages
lsusb | paste

I don't know it helps at all, but on a simple debian install these modules does not work too.
But after manually compiling the driver and blacklisting the default module, then adding the new one, then it works.

In addition, some thumbnails are "scrambled" - I'd include a screenshot but this latest build isn't generating screenshots, it only creates 0 byte files. An example "scrambled" image from a previous build can be seen
here ("Harry Potter and the Ch..") - at least now they're being scrambled with the correct colours!
On the whole thumbnail viewing is improved, but some thumbnails continue to randomly not display at all (or, less frequently, are scrambled).
Analog Audio (via 3.5mm socket) stops and restarts with a thump every 3 seconds when playing a movie (eg.MP3 audio, DD5.1 audio).
As per NisseDILLIGAF, some movies now play audio only (eg. SD MPEG-4) with no video.

Im using the latest build in this thread and i still have nearly 100% CPU Usage in the GUI.
I tried the advancedsettings.xml dirty regions set to 3 and no effect on CPU usage. RSS feed if off.
Anything else i should try?
I updated to the binaries in this thread using the inbuilt update folder.
I hear removing the database can help, how do i do that?

The databases are located in .xbmc/userdata/Database/ on the Storage partition. That's ~/.xbmc/userdata/Database when you're SSH'd into the Pi or you should be able to access it over SMB I hear.
As for my experience with
r11198 (I didn't try r11193), the supplied start.elf in 3rdparty/bootloader would not boot at all. Reverting to the start.elf from r11160 fixed it.
Also, I can no longer get audio passthrough. Was working on r11160 but now no matter what settings I try AC3 and DTS are both downmixed to stereo PCM. Anyone else experiencing this?

can you please report at
https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/issues ? the last xbmc-rpi changes contains a lot of new stuff to the whole xbmc codebase so its possible some functions are broken now which was working before.

Thanks Stephan & Gimli - build 11203 seems to have squashed that particular video issue, plus as a bonus the audio is no longer "thumping" every few seconds!
However now that video is playing better, I am seeing with this build buffering of movies (eg. 720p video/5.1 DTS audio) streamed over NFS that have never suffered from buffering with previous builds. Not sure if this suggests an issue with NFS in this build, or what.

Can confirm that videos are working again, haven't tried hd though just yet. General wonkiness with thumbnails and artwork remain.

Getting buffering on 720p MKVs with 5.1 DTS/DD.
Also my 5.1 DTS or DD audio is no longer passed through, im getting 2 channel PCM indicator on the AV Receiver.
Fan art and Thumbs work good now.
