Re: OpenELEC Testbuilds

Sun Aug 26, 2012 3:09 pm

I tried this media center, is a project very interested.
I try it with some of this demo file:
http://www.demo-world.eu/trailers/high- ... ailers.php
(I try the demo video "Vancouver City" with a fullHD projector, the result is excellent ;) )

As I watch a movie, if I press the right arrow (to fast forward) when I leave the key I hear a noise. A sort of "bump". What is the reason? (I use the analog audio output).

Another thing, how can I watch a movie and adjust the sound volume? Not with the bar at the bottom, I mean if there are no shortcuts.

Hi all, having been using raspbmc for a while. I installed openelec recently and find it much better in terms of nfs playback. I have now received my mpeg2 license for one of my pi's and went to install the code in the config.txt. Having modified config.txt on raspbmc thought it would be the same on openelec but its not so hopefully someone can help a complete linux noob.

After doing a bit of reading I found out I had to remount the flash drive. Done.
Then there is no config.txt. More reading and I have to use the touch command?? Config.txt now created.
Final problem -- how do I edit it? On other linux stuff I would have used the nano command but this doesnt exist. Please help

Thanks,

@skooby: Try vi instead of nano, or just mount the SD card in a Windows PC.

Sounds like skooby has never used vi, so he likely needs a quick intro

@skooby: Using vi (or vim) is significantly different than most text editors. You'll either love it (after learning it) or hate it. What you need to understand is that it has "modes". When you first open a file with vi you'll be in a navigation or brose mode. Very confusing when you try to type a letter and you don't see the text but instead something happens. To go into edit mode use the 'i' key (insert). To get back out of edit mode use your Esc key.

To do what you want:
vi config.txt <-- run VI, edit config.txt
i <-- switch to insert mode
type text as you would in any other text editor
Esc <-- switch out of insert mode
:wq <-- save (write) the file, and quit vi

No need to edit, just append a line to the config.txt file this:

echo 'decode_MPG2=0x_whatever' >> /flash/config.txt

Thanks for the help guys. As you say VI is somewhat different to other editors. I ended up using winscp to go and edit it thru windows. My setup now seems to be working very well. Just got to go and read up on how to hold the xbmc database on a server so that all 3 pi's can access the same one.

Latest builds do not work with e.g. EDIMAX 7811 nano wifi dongle. I reported earlier that it was working at v11797 but stopped sometime after but by about 11816. Trying to load the module manually (modprobe 8192cu results in "exec format error". I noticed that modinfo 8192cu returns:

vermagic: 3.2.26 preempt mod_unload ARMv6

even though the version is 3.2.28 ?

Does this mean that the module is not being recompiled against the packaged linux ?? I am building from latest git and I would have expected the module to be rebuilt, how do I force it to rebuild ?

regards

I had to add wifi firmware files to OpenElec in order to ge tmy wifi stick to work.
Because it's squashfs you can't just add files. Therefore in unsquash it added the files and put it back into a squashfs file.
You will need the squashfs tools. Maybe this is helpful for some people. Gte into the directory where the SYSTEM file is stored.

Code: Select all

sudo unsquashfs SYSTEM
then copy your needed files to squashfs-root
sudo mksquashfs ./squashfs-root SYSTEM.new -noappend -comp gzip
sudo cp SYSTEM.new /media/System/SYSTEM
You have to replace the directory /media/System with the one where the system partition of your OpenElec is mounted.

wifi support

Sun Sep 02, 2012 10:46 am

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Openelec now supports these dongles and its supposed to work without inserting stuff in the squashed file system. In fact it does work, its just that it needs to be recompiled against the updated linux version. I managed to force the rebuild by deleting the "build" file in the .stamps folder

delete file: build.openelec-rpi.arm-devel/.stamps/RTL8192CU/build
delete 8192cu* :build.openelec-rpi.arm-devel/RTL8192CU-v3.4.3_4369.20120622
and then PROJECT=RPi ARCH=arm make release

then it works again !

Ok, I find another topic that describe this problem. Wait that the developer solve this problem.

I have another problem:
- start projector and start raspberry
The image have resolution 1200 (is not correct)

- start projector
- after start raspberry
The image have resolution 1900x1080 (OK)

I try to punt in configuration file the options:
hdmi_force_hotplug=1 # or the output HDMI don't start
hdmi_mode=16 # I try to force 1900x1080 but don't work

How can I force the full HD resolution?

Hi,

Another "short" update (r11904):

http://sources.openelec.tv/tmp/image/op ... 04.tar.bz2
to update a older build without reinstalling see: http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title ... g_OpenELEC

its been a while since i released the last build for some reasons:
after the last XBMC update there was a rewrite of the XBMC code for RPi from Gimli with the goal to make the RPi port ready for merging with XBMC-master (the actual development branch for the upcoming release "Frodo"). This means there was a lot of changes, internally testing and preparing. After the XBMC Devcon one week ago the RPi Pullrequest was merged to XBMC-master shortly after the merge of the also long waiting PVR pull request. This now means PVR and RPi support is officially part of XBMC - and PVR support is avaible for RPi too. Thats both great news - more info you can read at http://openelec.tv/news/item/250-projec ... nt-changes
  • updated XBMC with PVR support many thanks to 'gimli', 'opdenkamp' and the whole XBMC dev team
  • Kernel linux 3.2.28 changed to the RPi foundation 3.2 kernel and updated to 3.2.28 many thanks to 'bootc', 'dom' and many others
  • various other improvenments, fixes and package updates
You can install HTS TVHeadend a PVR backend via XBMC's addon system (go to: System/Settings/Add-ons/Services/hts-tvheadend instal and reboot for more informations see: http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title ... dend_addon )

It is needed to update the bootloaderfiles which you can find in the build in the folder 3rdparty/bootloader it will be done automatically if you use a build 11766 or newer. For older builds you can update locally via Windows/Linux or via ssh:
  • login via ssh to your Raspi:

    Code: Select all

    ssh root@<ipaddress>
  • remount /flash r/w:

    Code: Select all

    mount -o remount,rw /flash
  • from your linux system copy the files via ssh/scp to the Raspi:

    Code: Select all

    scp 3rdparty/bootloader/* root@<ipaddress>:/flash
Known issues
  • libCEC is broken after the merge and will be fixed the next days
:!: because XBMC now supports officially RPi and PVR please use XBMC's Trac (http://trac.xbmc.org/) to report XBMC bugs and OpenELEC's github issue tracker (https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/issues) for OS related issues and feature/driver requests.

please test this build, and report back.

thanks
Stephan

Stephan - this seems like a huge improvement, with no obvious OMX related errors!

As usual for my testing, I've deleted Thumbnails and Texture13.db, rebooted then browsed through my entire (MySQL based) Movie library and allowed the R-Pi to re-cache the cover and fan art, and it's done it like a champ! Caching seems quicker than previous versions, with no crashes, timeouts or insufficient resource issues, and it may also have got rid of the unsightly vertical black bar too! Many *many* thanks to whoever has been working on this (gimli, dom? And of course yourself!) :)

One major problem remains (for me, at least) and that's NFS instability - I've raised ticket #13324 on the XBMC tracker for this (hopefully it's the correct version/components, if not can someone please amend? Frodo doesn't seem to be an option, so I selected GIT)

I was wondering if there is any diff between using bootcode.bin, loader.bin and start.elf files from raspberry pi git hub;

https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... aster/boot

And using the ones from 3rdparty/thebootloader folder that comes with each release of OpenELEC? Are they the exact same thing or have these ones been modified to work better with OpenELEC?

Personally, I always use the thirdparty binaries supplied with OpenELEC, so that if there's a problem (the identification and resolution of which is my primary interest, as I'm not yet using the R-Pi as a "production" system - it's purely for testing/debugging purposes) it can be reported and hopefully reproduced and then fixed. If you start mixing and matching binaries (even if they're official, and more recent) then it becomes more difficult to identify the cause of any particular problem.

With that said, I'm sure sraue is familiar with the ongoing efforts to improve the firmware and will try to supply the most recent firmware with each build. For instance, I can confirm the r11904 firmware has the USB interrupt fix - enabling this fix has reduced my interrupts from over 8500/sec to about 1500/sec while streaming a 1080p/DTS Blu-Ray over NFS.

Thanks for the reply, what you said makes sense, I will stick with the ones that come with each release.

On you previous post you said that r11904 had no obvious OMX related errors. I am hoping this will fix the problem I have been having where music tracks and videos have the last few second truncated. It is a random problem, sometime it happen worse than other times and it is inconsistent even on the same mp3 files, etc. I am just waiting for the CEC to be working again before I test it out.

I meant in relation to the conversion and display of images (cover art, fan art etc.).

I've only recently tried using XBMC for audio playback (just messing around, as I have a Squeezebox for that kind of thing) and I have noticed that gapless is not working in r11904 - it's not quite "a few seconds" or of truncation, maybe not even a second, but it's certainly not as it should be and there is a noticeable interruption between what should be gapless tracks. Can't say I've noticed any truncation in videos though, but that's mainly because I very rarely watch all the way to the end! :)

Airplay seems to have stopped working in 11904 - iPad finds it, selects it, goes black for a moment then returns to desktop.

The fix for that (not waiting for the audio_render to finish playing out its buffer) is in omxplayer:
https://github.com/huceke/omxplayer/pull/50

Hopefully will be integrated to xbmc soon.

This seems so much faster than XBian now but i am waiting for CEC support :(

Cec kinda works when you type "cec-client" but the dpad buttons don't register :(

Hope CEC will be fixed soon :)

While performing a complete rescan of my movie media over NFS - this time with the databases on the SD card and not using MySQL, probably not relevant but you never know - the XBMC scanning process hung when it got to "S" (Star Wars), so most of the way through but the first time I've seen it hang. The only error in the log was this:

Code: Select all

I killed xbmc.bin and restarted the scan (picking up correctly from Star Wars etc.), and pretty soon the log began filling up with the following errors:

I've now stopped scanning and will reboot the device to see if it helps (it does - no errors after a reboot).

Some sound related issues related to r11904:
1. Sound through jack to composite tv is rather low. Any reason for this? I've tried several options in the xbmc menu but none seem to have any effect. Sound is still present when selecting HDMI event though HDMI isn't used.
2. Mute/unmute doesn't work in XBMC's webinterface (I'm using AWXI but the same applies to the default). The gui in the webinterface says sound is muted but nothing changes on the tv.

I think this due to the way that Xbmc handle audio for now, it is on passthrough . you might have to wait till xbmc is using alsa sound driver to be able to do those things
