media center project

Tue Jan 07, 2014 1:37 pm

Hi
I'm a newbie, sorry for my question that can be stupid.
Is it possibile install a raspberry as media server?
My idea is store every multimedia files (photo, music and video) on a raspberry server.
And watch them in streaming through lan on tv, tablet or nb.
Is it possible?

Hi flabos.

Yes, it is possible. Check out Raspbmc, it could not be easier to configure a Raspberry Pi as xmbc with this installation.

http://www.raspbmc.com/

Download, install on SD and configure directly on your tv. It's pretty straight forward, there are a lot of good guides out there if you get stuck.

XBMC is a great "client" but not a good "server" of media even if it can work that way.

A better option might be to test http://www.squeezeplug.eu/.

so your suggestion is to install squeezeplug as server and XBMC as client?

Thanks

You never said that you want/need a client on the RPi.

XBMC is mostly about playing media and not necessary if the RPi only serves files.
