EmulationStation + Omxplayer = simple media player

It looks something like this. Click for bigger image.

I already had emulationstation (for my emulators) and omxplayer installed.
You can add a boxart picture and description. For some people, that's all they need. Example code below.

es_systems.cfg (in ~/.emulationstation)
Code: Select all
DESCNAME=Media
NAME=media
PATH=/media/winshare/Movies/
EXTENSION=.avi .avi .mp4 .MP4 .mkv .MKV
COMMAND=omxplayer -r -o hdmi %ROM%
gamelist.xml (put this in same folder of your movies)
Code: Select all
</gameList>
   <game>
      <path>/media/winshare/Movies/nameofmovie.mkv</path>
      <name>Movie Name</name>
      <desc>something about the movie</desc>
      <image>/media/winshare/boxart/nameofmovie.jpg</image>
   </game>
</gameList>

And if you want it to be a little prettier, you can create a theme. (like I did.)

It becomes even more simple if you do not need boxart and description. You could just do away with gamelist.xml, and emulationstation will just list the files of a folder.

Very quick. No X needed.
I even set the memory split to 64mb for a quick test. Played a 1920x1080 (1080p) mkv just fine. That same file would not play in XBMC (black screen, audio only) if set to 64mb. XBMC need's roughly ~109mb of gpu memory with hd content, thus most set the memory split to 128mb.

I have this up and working. However, when a video is launched that does not take up the entire screen, it shows a bunch of text on the top and bottom of the window along with a blinking cursor. Do you have any idea on how to get rid of this??

add -b to omxplayer options.
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

I dont have it with me right at the moment as I am at work. But -b doesn't seem to be a valid option? Is this only in a newer version of omxplayer?

your omxplayer seems to be quite old, if it doesn't support the -b option.

Awesome, I'll give this a whirl and keep ya posted if it works. Thanks for the tip! I've been trying all sorts of crazy stuff trying to get this to work properly.
