Raspbian + XBMC performance issues

Hello
I've installed Raspbian on my new raspberry.
I wan to use it mainly as a media server but I do want to use it as an xrdp server on occasions. Nothing heavy, just using it to browse through web archives.
Installing xbmc and xrdp was easy through apt-get and everything seems to be ok, BUT:
XBMC is eating all the CPU ressources. It would be ok if I was watching a video, but it does that all the time, even when doing nothing. The GUI is a bit sluggish too.

Anyone has a clue ?

thx

There are a lot of performance tweaks at the moment which are just making it into test builds of openelec and raspbmc, but I suspect the version in the raspbian repo's isn't as up to date as these. Try the latest gotham popcornmix openelec from here...

http://netlir.dk/rbej/builds/

or try some new raspbmc nightlys.

You will be pleasantly surprised im sure. If you HAVE to use raspbian then either wait for these changes to come into the repo or compile yourself.

You could try overclocking too if you haven't already. A fast sdcard makes a big difference also.

I do have to use raspbian.
I did overclock the pi and was a bit better, but CPU was still being hogged by xbmc. It did also make the pi unstable (even at 800MHz).
I guess my best bet is to swap the class 4 SD provided with the pi for a class 10 and to compile.

I'm currently trying out arch on a seperate SD, but it seems that arch documentation are usually as obscure as incomplete.
Anyone had any (good) experience installing xrdp on it ?

Mr pi is unstable at 800mhz with no overvolt. If I do an overvolt of 6 I can get it up to 950 which makes a big difference. It doesn't seem to run much hotter either.

This video gives a good idea of what is possible under ideal conditions with the new xbmc updates

Interesting.
I am using a script found here to display CPU infos. The thing is that CPU freq was changing according to the pi activity (that is when xbmc wasn't running) but overvolt wasn't always set at the sampe value for the same freq.
Would you mind posting your settings ?

thx

I use...

arm_freq=950
over_voltage=6
force_turbo=1

.. bear in mind this will invalidate your warranty. This disables dynamic overclocking and runs at the set speed all the time. I have tested my pi with up to 1050 without any problems, but my pi runs 24/7 and so I backed off 100mhz just in case.
